This fully washed and certified organic coffee is produced by Metad. The company was founded on the initiative of a family of American citizens who returned to their homeland, driven by the desire to develop an efficient and high-quality business. Aware of the potential shortcomings of the Ethiopian coffee industry, they decided to promote outstanding coffees while focusing on traceability to ensure better recognition of their region's products. Their Hambela coffee farm is located in the Guji region, they produce a gently flavoured coffee of which Belco is the exclusive importer for Europe.
The Hambela farm is located just over 400 km south of Addis Ababa in the Oromo region of the Guji appellation. It was established by Metad in 2013 and covers 200 hectares covered by a dense forest. It is a forest where endemic species and trees grow, some of which are extremely old. It is also the place where Metad collects the cherries from the coffee trees. Metad is aware of the importance of preserving this natural heritage, which is an additional source of value for the coffee produced here. Above all, by protecting the local know-how of the farmers who raise it, the environment is preserved.
Metad currently collects the coffee from 3,200 farmers who are members of 7 different associations linked to this farm. They all work on small, densely forested plots at an altitude of around 2,000 metres. Metad operates a very precise traceability system.
On the farm, Metad pays particular attention to the different stages of processing, including collection, storage, etc. It has African beds for drying. The group has established nurseries that produce about 600,000 seedlings, which are distributed free of charge to farmers.
METAD supports several local social and environmental projects. It organises regular training and pays advances to coffee farmers to stabilise their situation. The group has also distributed over 600,000 coffee seeds to the farmers it works with. More generally, METAD has helped build roads and provided funds for new primary schools, covering all costs for 800 pupils (equipment, teachers' salaries, etc.). It provides scholarships to 105 needy students in the Gedeo region and runs projects to support women farmers, especially in disease prevention and preparedness.
